Alphonse Mucha (1860–1939): The Slav Epic

This close-up detail is a famous section from one of Alphonse Mucha's (1860–1939) grandest masterworks: the very first canvas of his monumental 20-piece cycle, The Slav Epic (Slovanská epopej), titled "The Slavs in Their Original Homeland" (Slované v pravlasti, painted in 1912).

The Figure: The detail shows the face of the Slavic woman hiding in the bushes in the bottom-left foreground of the painting. In the full composition, she and her husband are the sole survivors hiding after their village has been raided and burned by invading nomads.
