Julio Romero de Torres was a Spanish painter who was active in the early 20th century. He was born in 1874 in Córdoba, Spain, and studied art at the Escuela de Bellas Artes in Madrid. Romero de Torres was known for his portraits, which were characterized by their strong, expressive brushwork and attention to detail. He was also interested in landscapes and still lifes, and his work often had a strong sense of atmosphere and mood.

Romero de Torres exhibited his work widely in Spain and internationally, and his work can be found in many public and private collections. He was a member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando in Madrid and the National Academy of Fine Arts in Buenos Aires, and was recognized for his contributions to the art world with a number of awards and honors. Romero de Torres died in 1930 at the age of 56.

Josef Šíma was a Czech painter and printmaker known for his landscape and portrait paintings. He was born in 1891 in Příbor, Czechoslovakia (now the Czech Republic) and studied art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. Šíma was a member of the Manes Association of Fine Artists in Prague and exhibited his work widely in Czechoslovakia and internationally. His work is held in numerous public and private collections, including the National Gallery in Prague and the Moravian Gallery in Brno. Šíma's paintings are known for their subtle, muted colors and their detailed, realistic brushwork, and he often depicted the landscapes and people of Czechoslovakia. He died in 1971 at the age of 80.

Alfred Reth was an Austrian painter and graphic artist who was born in 1884 and died in 1966. He was known for his portraits and landscapes, as well as his etchings and lithographs. Reth studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and was a member of the Hagenbund, a group of artists who were associated with the city's avant-garde movement. Reth's work was exhibited in numerous galleries and museums throughout Europe, and he was also a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna.

Hale Aspacio Woodruff (August 26, 1900 – September 6, 1980) was an American artist known for his murals, paintings, and prints.

Woodruff was born in Cairo, Illinois, in on August 26, 1900. He grew up in a black family in Nashville, Tennessee, where he attended the local segregated schools. He studied at the Herron School of Art and Design in Indianapolis, Art Institute of Chicago, and the Harvard Fogg Art Museum.

Teodoro Wolf-Ferrari (29 June 1878 – 27 January 1945) was an Italian painter, mainly depicting landscapes. He was born in Venice, the son of Augustus Wolf, a copyist of the works in the Art Gallery of Monaco. Teodoro studied until 1895 at the Academy of Fine Arts of Venice, where he studied with Guglielmo Ciardi and Pietro Fragiacomo. He returned to Monaco in 1896, where he was influenced by the symbolist Arnold Bocklin and he befriended Fritz Erler and Leo Piitz. He continued to exhibit in Monaco and Germany. In 1910, he had a personal exhibition in the Ca' Pesaro of Venice. He also exhibited at the Venice Biennale (since 1912) and Roman Secession (1913 and 1915). His later works depict mainly landscapes. He died in San Zenone degli Ezzelini.

La Lecture, 1932

La Lecture is a painting by Spanish artist Pablo Picasso completed in January 1932. The oil painting depicts Picasso's mistress and muse, Marie-Thérèse Walter, asleep with a book upon her lap. The painting led to the breakup of Picasso's marriage to Olga Khokhlova after she saw it at a retrospective exhibition and realised that the facial features were not her own.

Picasso met Marie-Thérèse Walter in 1927 as she exited the Paris Metro and they later began a relationship, which they kept secret because she was only seventeen and Picasso was married to Olga Khokhlova.
