William George Gillies (1898-1973) was a Scottish painter and printmaker known for his landscape paintings and etchings. 

He was born in Edinburgh and studied art at the Edinburgh College of Art. Gillies was a member of the Royal Scottish Academy and the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, and he exhibited his work widely in Scotland and England. His work is held in numerous public and private collections, including the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art and the British Museum in London. Gillies is known for his expressive and atmospheric landscapes, which often depict the rugged, dramatic landscapes of Scotland and the north of England.

Peter Doig (born 17 April 1959 is a Scottish painter. One of the most renowned living figurative painters, he has settled in Trinidad since 2002. In 2007, his painting White Canoe sold at Sotheby's for $11.3 million, then an auction record for a living European artist. In February 2013, his painting, The Architect's Home in the Ravine, sold for $12 million at a London auction.

Joan Kathleen Harding Eardley (1921-1963) was a Scottish painter known for her landscape and portrait paintings, as well as her paintings of children. She was born in Sussex, England and studied art at the Glasgow School of Art. Eardley was a member of the Royal Scottish Academy and exhibited her work widely in Scotland and England. Her work is held in numerous public and private collections, including the National Galleries of Scotland and the Glasgow Museums. Eardley is known for her expressive, gestural brushwork and her vibrant, saturated colors, and she often depicted the landscapes and people of Scotland, particularly the children of the slums of Glasgow. She died in 1963 at the age of 42.

The other colourists were John Duncan Fergusson, Francis Cadell and Leslie Hunter.

Anne Redpath OBE (1895–1967) was a Scottish artist whose vivid domestic still lifes are among her best-known works. Redpath's father was a tweed designer in the Scottish Borders. She saw a connection between his use of colour and her own. "I do with a spot of red or yellow in a harmony of grey, what my father did in his tweed." The Redpaths moved from Galashiels to Hawick when Anne was about six. After Hawick High School, she went to Edinburgh College of Art in 1913. Post-graduate study led to a scholarship which allowed her to travel on the Continent in 1919, visiting Bruges, Paris, Florence and Siena.
