Light Poplars (Peuplier clairs), 1959
Olivier Debré is considered to be one of the most important painters in French abstract art. His work has been referred to as “lyrical abstraction” or “fervent abstraction” because his paintings, which have been exhibited throughout Europe, capture the emotion created by a landscape.
Debré died at the age of 79 in 1999.
“Je me défends d’être un paysagiste, je traduis l’émotion qui est en moi devant le paysage, mais pas le paysage.”

American abstract: Jon Schueler
The Minch from Reiff, 1966 Oil on canvas
Gold And Silver Grey
My Father is the Son
Schueler originally wanted to become a writer and, after acquiring his MA at the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 1940, he worked for a short time as a journalist. The Second World War interrupted his writing.
After the war, he moved to San Francisco and taught English while he began attending the California School of Fine Arts where he studied with Edward Corbett, David Park, Hassel Smith, and Richard Diebenkorn. He chose Abstract Expressionism as his preferred style and moved to New York in 1951, where he became part of the New York School of artists. His first solo exhibition was in 1954, at the Stable Gallery.
