Alexej von Jawlensky was a Russian-born painter who was active in Germany during the first half of the 20th century. He was a member of the Expressionist movement and is known for his colorful, abstract paintings of faces and figures. Jawlensky was born in Torzhok, Russia in 1864 and studied art in St. Petersburg before moving to Munich in 1896. He spent most of his career in Germany, where he became a prominent member of the Expressionist movement and exhibited his work widely. Jawlensky's work was heavily influenced by the Fauvist movement, and he is known for his bold use of color and expressive brushwork. He died in 1941 in Wiesbaden, Germany.
