Jan Toorop was a Dutch painter, illustrator, and graphic artist who was born in 1858 and died in 1928. He was a leading figure in the modern art movements in the Netherlands and played a key role in the development of Art Nouveau in the country. Toorop studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague and later traveled to Paris, where he was exposed to the work of the French Impressionists and the Symbolist movement. He was known for his paintings, prints, and illustrations, which often featured symbolic and allegorical elements. Toorop's work was exhibited widely in Europe and the United States, and it is held in private and public collections around the world.
